Zinnias!

Today I’ll be shining the spotlight on one of my new favourite flowers to work with, zinnias! If I’m being honest, zinnias never really caught my eye until this year. I picked up a packet of seeds not really having any expectations, but I’ve come to love this beautiful flower in both the garden and in cut bouquets. Now I’ve been seeing zinnias everywhere this year, and for good reason!

Zinnias are extremely easy to grow, and there are SO many different kinds. They were originally discovered in Mexico and brought to Europe in the 1500s, but it wasn’t until the 1700s that the zinnia was named after a German botany professor, Johann Gottfried Zinn. They are native to South and Central America, but can thrive from late spring all the way into fall here in zone 5A! Zinnias are often associated with love, friendship and resilience, and in some cultures they are even thought to ward off negative energy.

My favorite type of zinnia would have be either Benary’s Giant Salmon Rose or Oklahoma Salmon. I’m personally drawn to the peach coloured zinnias, but they come in a variety of beautiful colours such as pink, red, orange, white and even lime! If you have the chance, I definitely recommend adding zinnias to your garden and/or flower arrangements😊🌼
